Time management (how to manage your time?)
It takes time to grow a freelance business; it takes time to establish yourself; and it takes time to make money. All of this can be nerve-wracking and cause countless sleepless nights. For a better time management, consider our next five tips:
Sets goals
Before starting a freelance activity or freelance project, you should think first where you want to go. A goal should be clearly defined. This way, you will have one clear direction, and this will help planning your time.
Organize yourself
If you do not know what to do, then there is no point in planning time. You have to study the projects that you’ll do the next day. This way, you’ll be more organized and the time available will be used efficiently. Try to name tasks with short, but representative, titles.
Organizing your work will reduce most of your lost time. Organize your computer files, depending on the projects you are working on. Organize your emails in folders using various filters. Do not let any mail “unprocessed”. If you’re asked to do a task in the mail, put it immediately in the “To Do List”.
By organising your own schedule, you can often accommodate all kinds of non-work aspects to your life that are less accessible to those bound to cubicles, whether that means hobbies, family or personal wellness. According to one survey, about 46% of full-time freelancers work less than 30 hours per week, and if we widen the sample to include part-timers, we get to about two-thirds.
Prioritize tasks
As a freelancer, it is important to determine the type of tasks that you’ve set. There are tasks important or less important, urgent and vital, long or short. Combining these features and assigning tasks will get you information on which you can determine the order in which you’ll execute what you have proposed.
Focus
Once you start working on a task, focus on it. Remove everything that can distract you: phone, TV, etc. And if you start doing a task, finish it without taking other projects. You don’t want to get to have 10 tasks at the same time, and none of them to be finished.
Take breaks
Even if this advice is easy to follow, it has a great importance. If you think you need a break, take a break. Do not forget that you are human. At the same time, do not waste breaks. During breaks, talk to other freelancers, learn from their experiences. Grow your ideas.
Each evening, before going to sleep, reflect on what you’ve accomplished that day. Prepare yourself for the following day by listing your top three priority action items for the morning. When you punch in the next day, tackle those tasks before you even look at anything new.
