DOT God anyone? How about DOT Ram? Or maybe a DOT Jehovah, DOT Catholic or DOT Evangelical? Do any of these sound good to you? If so, grab $185,000 and petition the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the religious domain extension of your choice–and pray!
Pray because there may be a speed bump or two on your quest for Internet domain religiosity. Expect many bidders for every available religious domain extension just as there are for the strictly commercial extensions such as Dot Hotel, Dot House or… Dot Soup. And some heavy hitters in the church world are out to quash the very idea of religious domain extensions.
The Vatican recently requested that ICANN stay out of the religion business: please, they said, no DOT God no DOT Protestant and for certain no Dot Catholic. The Vatican believed that allowing domain extensions like Catholic, Protestant, God and the like, would mean various groups struggling over their ownership and causing even more religious bad will.
Think about it, who gets Dot Catholic? The Roman Catholic Church or the Orthodox Catholic Church? Who would get DOT Protestant? Baptists or Lutherans? One can only imagine the violent conflict over say, Dot Prophet. Would that be Shia or Sunni?
Nor is the Pope the only authority censoring religion based domain names. India asked that DOT Ram not be allowed–Chrysler, of course, wants it bad. Why no Dot Ram? Ram means a big mean Dodge truck, but RAAM is the title of the Hindu divinity! They are too easily confused.
As yet, we have been unable to discover if anyone is requesting the domain extension Dot Atheist or Dot Devil. Hard to believe someone wouldn’t sooner or later.
But maybe the Pope and Hindus needn’t worry. The old generic domain extensions have managed to get along together without any major kerfuffles. God Dot Com belongs to the Evangelical Media Group, whereas God Dot Net belongs to the Seek God Ministries, a fundamentalist Christian bunch. God Dot Info, on the other hand, embraced Mammon; it appears to be just another parked domain trying to make some money with ads. The Roman Catholic Church appears to control Catholic Dot Com, and Prophet Dot Com is… well, the website claims “We are a strategic brand and marketing consultancy. We help our clients win by delivering inspired and actionable ideas.” Nothing to get worked up about there!
